in the present paper, investigations about the role of significant others, such as parents or coaches on youngsters’ intrinsic motivation are reviewed. Empirical evidence is gathered from two main classical theories of sport psychology: Cognitive evaluation theory and achievement goal theory. A proposal is derived from this review that focuses on the mediational role of motivational orientation as well as on the role of perceived competence and perceived autonomy on intrinsic motivation. Finally, the paper concludes with the description of an integration of both models to explain how significant others may have an influence on yongsters’ intrinsic motivation.
