The objective of this work was to establish the influence of basic psychological needs on the habits of physical and sports practice of the students of the 8th grade. The sample design was random, stratified and proportional by gender. The participants were 308 students (ladies n = 144 and men n = 164) from the schools of the Valparaiso-Chile Commune. The scale of measurement of the basic psychological needs and a questionnaire of sports habits for the school populations were used. The results indicated a significant association between the practices or not of physical-sports activities outside Physical Education class and autonomy, competition and gender. The data found warn that basic psychological needs could be factors that would positively influence the promotion of physical sports practice habits in the school context.
