The motives are elements that can help explain behaviours. Likewise, these play a very important role in the understanding of sports practice. This is how, within the present investigation, it is explained -from the Needs theory- how these motives differ from each other, how they are associated and how they differ when considering groups of athletes (selected and unselected). For it, a sample of university students from northern Mexico was taken, using Student's t-test, repeated measures ANOVA and Pearson's correlation, which statistically corroborated two of the three hypotheses. It was concluded that the reasons for sports practice differ from each other; which did not happen when comparing two samples (selected and unselected). In addition, while these elements are associated in a significant and positive way, self-realization-view as a maximum need-can be considered as a dependent variable to understand the motivation of sports practice.
